Ezra Collective, a London-based band renowned for their dynamic blend of Afrobeat, hip-hop, grime, reggae, Latin, R&B, highlife, and jazz, has captured the spotlight in the music world with their recent accolades and achievements. Their second album, "Where I'm Meant To Be," recently won the prestigious Mercury Prize, cementing their place as pioneers in contemporary jazz. This recognition follows a historic 2022 performance where they became the first jazz act to sell out Wembley Arena. The band's journey began in 2012 when its members met at Tomorrow's Warriors, a youth club in central London. It was here that Femi Koleoso, the band's leader, was introduced to jazz and inspired to form Ezra Collective. Their debut EP, "Chapter 7," released in 2016, set the stage for their musical trajectory. Three years later, they released their debut album, "You Can't Steal My Joy," which further showcased their innovative sound characterized by complex rhythms and melodies.
Ezra Collective's music is deeply rooted in their experiences growing up in London and their love for dance and music. This is evident in tracks like "N29," named after the night bus Koleoso frequently took home from nights out in the city. Despite plans for a world tour being thwarted by the pandemic's onset in New Zealand, the band found solace and creativity in their camaraderie.
