The Ukraine-Russia conflict has intensified rapidly over the past few days. In this tit-for-tat pattern of drone strikes and retaliatory attacks, deaths have been reported on both sides. Ukrainian General Staff reported that its air forces destroyed an enemy command post for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) units. The successful Ka-52 strike against Ukrainian armoured vehicles near Tetkino, Kursk region on June 17, 2021. This strike is simply the latest of Ukraine’s ongoing military efforts, which have increasingly stretched across the Russian border.
Russian state media subsequently claimed that Russian air defense units shot down 105 Ukrainian drones. This is exactly what happened during the recent wave of attacks. Moscow’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, confirmed that at least 19 drones were destroyed while en route to the capital, indicating a heightened defensive posture in response to Ukraine’s aerial assaults. The drone strikes’ coercive effect was felt across all five strike regions. In the Russian-controlled city of Kursk, Ukrainian forces allegedly killed three civilians and wounded seven others in strikes on the local military headquarters.
Reportedly around 20 of the drones were used in the attacks, and Oleh Synegubov, the head of the regional military administration of Kharkiv, stated… These attacks came in multiple waves over more than two hours. The biggest fire started at the Barabashovo market in Kharkiv. That was after Russian drone slave-targeted the area a day earlier during the 11-month-old invasion’s continuing blitz.
Russian military actions led to great destruction and loss of life in Ukraine itself. Following the latest strike on the Odesa region which caused at least one civil fatality, as well as damage of private residential buildings. Alexander Khinshtein, the Russian governor, said two transformers were destroyed in this one strike forcing power outages across a large area. One man was incapacitated by injuries inflicted in the overnight and early morning attacks in the Dnipropetrovsk region.
“As a result of the strike, up to 20 occupiers were eliminated, and their equipment was destroyed,” – Ukraine
Ukrainian forces are increasing their pressure on the adjacent western Russian oblast of Kursk. This decision further demonstrates the deepening extremity of the war still being waged. So far, reports have surfaced of civilian casualties from these strikes, with residents killed or wounded in the Glushkovsky district bordering Ukraine.
In response to the drone attack threat, all four airports in Moscow closed for several hours. Luckily for all of us, they recently re-opened. This new, albeit short-lived, breakout marks the collective realization of increasing security in the heart of Russia with every drone strike Ukraine pulls off.
The terrible, twisted reality of this conflict shows us a cycle of violence that deepens with every step. It seems that both sides are determined to display their military strength while targeting and destroying enemy assets. The situation on the ground is still developing, with both Ukrainian and Russian forces actively targeting one another through occupied areas.
