Emma Raducanu Targeted by “Fixated Fan” at Dubai Tennis Championships

Emma Raducanu faced a challenging ordeal at the Dubai Tennis Championships after being targeted by a man displaying "fixated behaviour." The incident unfolded on Monday, with the same individual identified in the first few rows during Raducanu's match on Tuesday. Alerting the chair umpire to the situation, Raducanu found comfort from her opponent, 14th seed Karolina Muchova. Security promptly removed the individual from court three, allowing Raducanu to return to applause from the supportive crowd.

Despite the unsettling incident, Raducanu continued with her match. However, she fell to a 7-6 6-4 defeat against Karolina Muchova. Observers noted Raducanu hiding behind the umpire's chair two games into her second-round loss. The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) responded by banning the individual from all WTA events, working closely with Raducanu and her team to ensure her well-being.

"Player safety is our top priority, and tournaments are advised on security best practices for international sporting events," said the Women's Tennis Association (WTA).

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) expressed its concerns about player safety, emphasizing the unique challenges female players often face.

"This incident once again highlights issues around safety that all players, but female players in particular, can face," noted the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).

The tournament organisers praised the swift action taken by security teams.

"The tournament security team worked in collaboration with the WTA security team to proactively identify and immediately eject the individual in question from the stadium," stated the tournament organisers.

The Dubai Tennis Championships supported the WTA's decision and actions, ensuring a commitment to player safety.

"We fully supported the WTA's statement, and subsequent action taken by the governing body of the women's game," confirmed the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Following the incident, Raducanu left Dubai and shared her reflections on Instagram.

"Difficult experience yesterday but I'll be okay and proud of how I came back and competed despite what happened at the start of the match," posted Raducanu.

She also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support received from fans.

"Thank you for the messages of support," she added on Instagram.
