Drew Barrymore Advocates for Water Conservation and Self-Acceptance

With Drew Barrymore as the latest advocate for conservation and self-care, we can make beauty a force for good for ourselves and the planet. She has built a reputation for her directness. In a surprising disclosure, she recently let slip that she doesn’t wash her hair more than twice a week—sometimes waiting five or six days in between washes. Barrymore says this practice is good for her hair. It saves water, a major issue in her home state of California.

Having spent much of her life in California, Barrymore knows that there’s an urgent need to save water. She has made it her mission to encourage others to adopt simple changes in their daily lives to help the planet. “Tree-hugging! And stargazing! And picnicking by the river!” she exclaimed when describing her escapades in the woods. Barrymore’s latest collaboration with the National Parks Foundation for Earth Day is a testament to that ambition. Combined, they’re helping to support more than 200,000 service hours concentrating on national conservation efforts around the United States.

Embracing Authenticity and Self-Love

Barrymore advocates for a trend she describes as “authentic, real, honest-to-goodness self-acceptance and self-love.” Her approach to beauty reflects this philosophy. Besides her unusual approach to hair care, she teaches gentle skincare. I just wash my face in the morning—very gently. I like to think of it just like giving my skin a good morning,” she said.

The actress has long spoken out against anti-aging trends. “I just can’t get behind anti-aging anything. Aging is a gift—it means we’re still here! I want to embrace time, not fight against it,” she stated. While a little scary, this shift in perspective ultimately reinforces her main theme of self-acceptance. She encourages other women to love their natural beauty and not give into societal pressures.

Beauty Routines and Personal Reflections

For each session, Barrymore preps her braids by using leave-in conditioner to keep the locks moisturized, she shares. This seemingly small gesture represents her larger dedication to making self-care a priority. Now, every morning she stands in front of the mirror and cultivates self-kindness. I think I do, and to start—I take a minute in front of the mirror every day and look myself in the eye and say something nice.

Looking back at her beauty decisions over the decades, Barrymore laughed and agreed that some of those trends were atrocious. Maybe I was just a little too zealous with the tweezers in the ‘90s. But it was a thing! Live and learn! Drawing power from her past, she is at the forefront of a more self-affirming direction in beauty that celebrates Blackness today.
