The debate intensified after U.S. President Donald Trump suggested purchasing Greenland, a proposal that Frederiksen dismissed as "absurd." Trump's subsequent decision to cancel his trip to Denmark in 2019 following this rejection has added a layer of diplomatic tension.
Denmark's trade sector is expressing apprehension over potential economic repercussions, particularly in light of Trump's threats to impose high tariffs if Denmark refuses to cede Greenland. Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen emphasized the seriousness with which Denmark views these threats, stating:

Sixty percent of Greenland's economy relies on Denmark, highlighting the intricacy of their interdependence. Nevertheless, Greenland's leader has voiced a desire for greater autonomy, urging the territory to liberate itself from "the shackles of colonialism."
Opposition MP Rasmus Jarlov criticized Frederiksen for not being more assertive in rebuffing Trump's idea of acquiring Greenland. He remarked:
