David Steiner Appointed as New Postmaster General of the U.S. Postal Service

David Steiner has officially been chosen to serve as the next postmaster general. This will be a big change for the association, though! Steiner is a current board member at FedEx. He will replace Louis DeJoy, who resigned in March, and Doug Tulino, the current acting postmaster general. The news broke on Friday, with Steiner to formally take over the helm in July.

We are excited to have David Steiner at the helm to bring that experience to bear. Prior to AmeriPride, he was the CEO of Waste Management, Inc. from 2004-2016. His leadership during that transformative time laid the groundwork for many of the business and operational practices we see at the company today. He has been a director at FedEx since 2009. Given his experience running one of the world’s largest logistics networks and navigating business operations, his talent will certainly be needed at the USPS.

Amber McReynolds, Chair of the USPS Board of Governors, said that she is strongly supportive of Steiner’s leadership. She stated that “Dave is the right person to lead the Postal Service at this time to ensure this magnificent and historic organization thrives into the future.” Her first order of business was to tout his deep experience. She called him “a highly respected leader and executive with great vision, experience, and skill that can be brought to bear on the Postal Service’s long-term mission and business requirements.”

Of course, nobody is more excited about Steiner’s new role than Steiner himself. He shared his enthusiasm in a statement, “This is an amazing honor to be at the head of the world’s greatest postal organization, with a history even older than the founding of the United States itself. Though an obvious fan of USPS 15675, he thanked the institution for its continued service, saying, “I have tremendous respect for the public service and business mission of this fantastic institution.”

Her appointment could not come at a more important moment as USPS is confronted by unprecedented challenges. This comes as the largely unfunded service has posted 108 billion in cumulative losses since 2007 even after $11.4 billion in taxpayer relief. Frederick Smith, founder and CEO of FedEx, underscored Steiner’s significance. He said that Steiner’s keen sense of business will be key in addressing the major issues affecting the United States Postal Service.

Steiner heads to Olympia preparing to confront that defining role. Stakeholders on both the postal and logistics sides are intensely interested to see how his leadership will set the course for USPS operations and strategy moving forward. His extensive background in both public service and corporate management positions him as a potentially transformative leader for one of America’s oldest institutions.
