David Hockney Celebrates Life and Art in His Biggest Exhibition Yet

David Hockney, the renowned British artist, is set to unveil his most significant exhibition to date, aptly named “David Hockney 25.” At close to 88, Hockney emits an aura of both frailty and vitality. He exudes cool in a beige, red, and black houndstooth suit, topped off stylishly by his signature round yellow glasses. This major retrospective exhibition turns the page on 25 years of his exuberant artistic journey, a transcendental celebration of swirling vivid hues and positivity.

It’s fitting that the exhibition would open in Paris, the city where Hockney has spent two years carefully orchestrating the exhibition. He has a number of very serious health challenges, but he draws on the support of two full-time London-based carers. Even so, he remains a hardworking, aspiring artist, painting an average of four to six hours every day. One example of Hockney’s enduring defiance comes through as he reflects on the last two-and-a-half years. In spring 2020, he made the most of his iPad to document the beauty of blossoming trees and flowers during the pandemic.

Hockney’s work is beloved around the world, earning him appropriate accolades as one of the greatest artists living today. He’s produced more than 220 iPad works, most of which cover the walls of this show like a brilliant army, flanking your reception. These digital artworks include high-resolution, large-scale depictions of the Moon. Recent developments in technology have made this all possible. It’s a testament to Hockney’s adaptability as an artist.

In this exclusive interview, Hockney reflected on making it to this stage of his career. “I just thought I probably wouldn’t be here,” he admitted, reflecting on his initial doubts about witnessing this exhibition come to fruition. And saluting, no less, as they come together for this art exhibition in Paris, Mr. Once everyone’s been accepted, he’s finally able to see “what I was always trying to do, really.

Despite his health concerns, Hockney remains optimistic. He found his great-nephew, Richard Hockney, to sit for him on a regular basis over the last 28 years. It’s a testament to how strong their bond runs and how it enriches Hockney’s creative process. He describes Richard as someone who “sees the truer representation of yourself than you do,” emphasizing the importance of their relationship in his creative journey.

Hockney experienced a lighthearted epiphany while reminiscing about his great uncle. He pictured what his late uncle would think about his newfound fortune. He’d have considered that a pretty stupid move,” he laughed. Despite everything, it’s still painting that makes him happy and he’s still practicing art on a more restricted basis. “I will paint somebody else. And I just do my thing,” he said, reaffirming his dedication to creative expression in the face of life’s unknowns.

The exhibition is sure to be a must-see event for art lovers. Hockney asserts that “anybody who has just a little visual sensibility will really enjoy this show.” And he believes that’s what art is supposed to do — create that human emotion and connection. That belief comes through in the jubilant works on view in “David Hockney 25.”

Reflecting on the passage of time and the inevitability of change, Hockney shares words of wisdom: “Do remember they can’t cancel the spring.” This simple declaration sums up his philosophy towards resilience and the lasting power of beauty, despite all of life’s hardships.

As he looks ahead to that opening night, though, Hockney’s enthusiasm leaps off the screen. You’re gonna find yourself super appealing and super kindhearted, though.” “I’m literally laughing, like we actually made it!” he shouted celebrating not just the exhibition but the journey that led him here.
