These glasses, originally estimated to sell for between £1,000 and £1,500, shattered expectations by fetching an impressive £37,800 at Christie's auction house.
The auction not only included Dame Edna's signature glasses but also featured various outfits from the character's illustrious career. A gown worn by Humphries as Dame Edna during the 2013 Royal Variety Show was sold for £21,420. The auction realized a total of £4,627,224, including buyer's premium, showcasing the enduring appeal of Barry Humphries' creations.
Barry Humphries, who passed away in 2023 at the age of 89 due to complications from hip surgery, left behind a legacy celebrated by many. In honor of his contributions to the arts, a state memorial was held at the Sydney Opera House. His collection included rare books and manuscripts, such as a first edition copy of Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest," inscribed by Wilde himself to his publisher.
