This fishing boat had an incredible brush with a killer whale along Northumberland’s coast on Tuesday morning. The miracle sighting happened off the coast near Beadnell of Northumberland, where the crystal clear waters teem with exotic marine life.
An astonished local commercial fisherman filmed the dramatic escape. This incredible footage won’t shy away from showing you up close and personal the true nature of these majestic creatures. William Shiel, a tour boat operator who is deeply familiar with the area, was as enthusiastic as we were about the resulting footage. He said it was “fantastic to witness.” He touted the region’s clean-cut vibes. He called those waters a “crystal clear” an “oceanic paradise” and said that area is a “paradise for wildlife.”
Prof Per Berggren, a marine biologist from Newcastle University, suggested that the killer whale sighting may indicate a pod had traveled to the area. He noted that the nearby Farne Islands have a healthy newborn young population of grey seals. This abundance must be attracting these predators. Young grey seals are one of the killer whales’ favourite prey species. This is what makes the Northumberland coast an appealing stomping ground for these amazing predators.
Prof Berggren provided a glimpse of what he’s learned through his 40-year career studying marine mammals. He remarked, “In my experience, orcas are the most amazing and most impressive animal you can ever encounter.”
The killer whale sighting further highlights the ecological importance of our Northumberland coast. The report highlights the region’s importance as a productive nursery and breeding ground for many iconic marine species. As conservation efforts make their way through Congress, such encounters are sure to inspire onlookers about the natural wonders still found in these coastal waters.
