The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has revised its perspective regarding the origins of the virus responsible for COVID-19, according to a report by NBC News on Saturday. The agency now leans towards the belief that the coronavirus may have originated from a laboratory in China, marking a significant shift from its previous position. This new assessment emerges from a comprehensive review of existing information rather than any newly obtained data.
Previously, the CIA had remained uncertain about the virus's origin. However, with the recent adjustment in their stance, a laboratory origin now seems more plausible to the agency. This aligns with a report released in 2021 by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which indicated that four intelligence community (IC) agencies leaned towards a natural exposure to infected animals as the cause of the first infection, albeit with low confidence. At that time, three other agencies expressed uncertainty about the origin.
Interestingly, the Energy Department had already expressed its preference for a laboratory origin last year, albeit with low confidence. Meanwhile, some experts, including former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases chief Anthony Fauci, maintain the view that the virus likely crossed over to humans naturally from bats or another intermediate species.
The virus was initially identified in late 2019 in Wuhan, China. The Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), located in the same city, has been at the center of speculation regarding a potential laboratory origin. However, the CIA's current belief is that research activities at the Wuhan Center for Disease Control—a separate entity from WIV—could be linked to the spillover event.
China has consistently denied the possibility of a laboratory origin for the virus. The review process concerning COVID-19’s origins began during the final weeks of President Biden's administration and concluded before President Trump assumed office. Despite ongoing investigations, the CIA posits that Chinese leadership neither knows nor desires to uncover the true origins of the virus.
"CIA assesses with low confidence that a research-related origin of the COVID-19 pandemic is more likely than a natural origin based on the available body of reporting." – A CIA spokesperson
The CIA spokesperson further elaborated on the agency's position by stating:
"CIA continues to assess that both research-related and natural origin scenarios of the COVID-19 pandemic remain plausible." – A CIA spokesperson
