Chris Appleton’s “Glow-Down” Makeunder: A Fresh Start on The Drew Barrymore Show

Celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton showcased his transformative styling skills on a recent episode of The Drew Barrymore Show. In a segment dedicated to embracing natural beauty, Appleton gave a "makeunder" to Real Simple reader Steph Calcutti, who ordinarily favored long, wavy hair extensions and a full face of makeup. The transformation, which aired during the show's "glow-down" theme, not only changed Steph's appearance but also significantly impacted her self-perception.

During the show, Appleton removed Steph's hair extensions, revealing her natural hair length. Initially feeling vulnerable without her usual glam look, Steph expressed that the experience made her feel "lighter" and symbolized "a fresh start." Appleton then proceeded to chop 10 inches off Steph's hair, crafting a new style that highlighted her facial features and brought a sense of renewal.

"For Steph, I removed her hair extensions to show off her natural length," said Chris Appleton.

Appleton's approach emphasizes the power of perspective in creating new looks. He believes that sometimes the best ideas come from someone who sees things differently. This philosophy was evident as he worked on Steph's hair, transforming her appearance with precision and care. According to Appleton, the right haircut can accentuate one's natural beauty, but healthy hair is crucial. He advocates for the use of hydrating hair masks and leave-in conditioners, noting that even the best haircut won't look good on dry or damaged hair.

"Makeovers are why I started in this business; I can help people look and feel their best—it's pretty powerful," explained Chris Appleton.

The episode's glow-down theme celebrated bare-faced beauty, with notable personalities such as Drew Barrymore, Valerie Bertinelli, Pamela Anderson, and Mally Roncal going makeup-free. Appleton, a member of Drew's Crew, shared valuable insights into hair care during the segment. He highlighted that hair could be a person's superpower, capable of boosting confidence and altering one's mood.

Appleton's go-to hair mask is the Color Wow Money Mask from Sephora, which underscores his commitment to maintaining healthy hair. He suggests that while following hair trends can be enjoyable, understanding what complements one's face shape is vital.

"Of course it's fun to follow what's trending when it comes to hair, but at the end of the day, certain face shapes simply look better with a side part," noted Chris Appleton.

For Steph, the transformation process not only changed her outward appearance but also led to a deeper realization about beauty and self-love. She felt more confident and beautiful after the makeunder, understanding that self-love is a challenging yet essential component of true beauty.

"Although self-love can be the hardest, when you take a lot of the hair away, it shows how beautiful you really are," remarked Chris Appleton.
