China Strikes Back with Tariffs on Canadian Goods Amid Growing Trade Tensions

China has announced plans to impose retaliatory tariffs on a range of Canadian products, escalating tensions in the ongoing global trade war. The Chinese government stated that it will implement a 100% tariff on Canadian rapeseed oil, oilcakes, and peas, alongside a 25% levy on aquatic products and pork. These tariffs are set to come into effect on March 20, according to China's Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council.

The decision follows Canada's recent imposition of a 25% tariff on imports of steel and aluminum products from China, effective October 15. Additionally, Canada had previously levied a 100% import tariff on Chinese-made electric vehicles starting October 1 of the previous year. Beijing's move is a direct response to these measures, which they view as discriminatory.

"Canada's unilateral imposition of tariffs disregards objective facts and World Trade Organization rules, is a typical trade protectionist practice, constitutes a discriminatory measure against China, seriously infringes on China's legitimate rights and interests, and undermines China-Canada economic and trade relations," – China's customs authorities

The tariffs represent the latest chapter in a series of trade tensions involving major economies such as the U.S., China, Canada, and Mexico. In recent months, these countries have announced various tariffs aimed at protecting domestic industries and addressing trade imbalances.

The introduction of these tariffs by China signifies its firm stance against what it perceives as protectionist policies by Canada. Beijing's decision underscores the complexities of international trade relations and highlights the potential for further economic strain between the two nations.
