Chelsea Football Club finds itself in a perplexing situation. Despite dominating possession and completing more passes than Brighton during their recent FA Cup encounter, Chelsea managed just one shot on target. This performance underscores a growing concern at Stamford Bridge: the absence of a reliable striker despite significant financial investments.
The club's current season record remains commendable, but a recent lean spell has raised questions about their attacking capabilities. The team has spent a hefty £445 million on forwards, yet none have emerged as a dependable number nine. Most of this expenditure has been directed towards acquiring wingers or number 10s, including Christopher Nkunku, Raheem Sterling, Mykhailo Mudryk, Pedro Neto, Joao Felix, and Cole Palmer.
Chelsea's strategy to improve Nicolas Nkunku's performance without impacting Cole Palmer's form appears critical. Palmer, who has been utilized in a more central role this season compared to his deployment under former manager Mauricio Pochettino, remains a key figure. However, he has experienced a downturn, failing to score in four consecutive Premier League games—a first since his arrival in the summer of 2023. Despite this dry spell, Palmer's contribution has been notable, with involvement in a league-high 39 goals in 2024, comprising 26 goals and 13 assists.
Chelsea's recent injury crisis has exacerbated their forward issues, leaving the squad notably thin upfront. Noni Madueke's hamstring injury during the Brighton match further depleted their attacking options. Following Madueke's substitution, Chelsea's last three fit senior forwards were all on the pitch.
The club's recruitment strategy in recent years has seen the signing of numerous attacking players post-takeover. Yet, none have appeared ready for the Premier League. The only other central strikers signed—David Datro Fofana, Deivid Washington, and Marc Guiu—are young prospects acquired for a combined £34 million. Meanwhile, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, brought in for £12 million for former manager Thomas Tuchel, found himself sidelined after Tuchel's departure.
