Champions League Knockout Draw Set to Shape Tournament’s Path

The UEFA Champions League's eagerly anticipated round-of-16 draw is set to unfold on February 21 at 6 a.m. ET / 11 a.m. GMT. This pivotal event promises to shape the tournament's trajectory, showcasing top teams vying for supremacy in the prestigious competition. The draw will determine which of the top eight teams will play at home during the second leg, while also establishing the full bracket leading to the final showdown.

The knockout playoff round comprises the league's elite, who were drawn into their respective positions last month. The top half of the bracket is notably strong, featuring formidable contenders Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). The draw's structure ensures that top-ranked teams are seeded, providing them with the advantage of hosting the second leg. The top eight teams are paired in a structured manner: 1st with 2nd, 3rd with 4th, 5th with 6th, and 7th with 8th.

As the draw unfolds, one of the crucial moments will be determining whether Liverpool or Barcelona lands in the top half of the bracket. The first team drawn between these two will face off against PSG, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the proceedings. Each of the seeded pairs has two potential outcomes in the draw, making for an unpredictable path toward the final.

The tournament's format stipulates an overall player limit of 25, ensuring clubs maintain strategic depth while managing their squads. Clubs that finished between 25th and 36th positions were eliminated following the league phase, narrowing the field to the most competitive sides.

The journey to the final involves a series of high-stakes matches. The quarterfinals are slated for April 8-9, with return legs scheduled for April 15-16. Subsequently, the semifinals will take place on April 29-30, followed by second legs on May 6-7. These fixtures will determine which teams earn the coveted opportunity to contest the final, set for May 31 at Munich's Allianz Arena.

In an effort to balance scheduling, each club will play once on a Tuesday and once on a Wednesday. Furthermore, once the round-of-16 matchups are confirmed on February 21, another draw will immediately take place to decide which teams will enjoy home advantage in the quarterfinals and semifinals.
