Roberta Flack, an iconic figure in the world of music, passed away on February 24, 2023, at the age of 88. Known for her soulful voice and ground-breaking achievements, Flack left an indelible mark on the music industry. Her journey began with a full scholarship to Howard University at just 15 years old. She initially pursued a path as a classical pianist before her talent for singing was discovered by musician Les McCann in a jazz club, setting her on a trajectory to stardom.
"Her voice touched, tapped, trapped, and kicked every emotion I've ever known." – Les McCann
Flack's recording career took off after her discovery by McCann, allowing her to break boundaries and set records. Her collaboration with artists such as Donny Hathaway and Miles Davis further cemented her position in musical history. In the early 1970s, Flack took a brief hiatus from performing to focus on recording and charitable causes. This period saw her win back-to-back Grammy Awards for Song of the Year with "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and "Killing Me Softly With His Song".

Throughout the 1980s, Flack spent much of her time touring, consistently captivating audiences worldwide with her powerful performances. In 2012, she recorded an album of Beatles covers titled "Let It Be Roberta", showcasing her unique ability to interpret and transform classic songs.
In 2019, Flack suffered a stroke, which marked the beginning of her health challenges. She publicly announced in 2022 that she was diagnosed with motor neurone disease and could no longer sing. Despite these hurdles, her influence and contributions to music did not go unrecognized. In 2020, she received a lifetime achievement award from the Grammys, an honor she deeply cherished.
