Brian Murphy, the beloved actor renowned for his role in the ITV sitcom "Man About the House," has died at the age of 92. He passed away peacefully at his home in Kent on Sunday morning. Born on the Isle of Wight in 1932, Murphy's illustrious career spanned several decades, beginning in the 1950s and encompassing numerous acclaimed performances both on stage and screen.
Murphy's acting journey started as a member of the pioneering Theatre Workshop, an innovative company founded by Joan Littlewood and Gerry Raffles. This group was committed to modernising theatre and making it accessible to working-class audiences. Throughout his early career, Murphy worked closely with Littlewood, performing in many of her Shakespeare productions and starring in her only feature film, the kitchen sink comedy "Sparrows Can't Sing."
He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of George Roper in the spin-off series "George and Mildred," where he played the henpecked husband opposite Yootha Joyce. This role further cemented his status as a household name and showcased his exceptional comedic talent.
In addition to his iconic sitcom roles, Murphy appeared in several television programmes, including episodes of the BBC medical drama "Holby City," the sketch programme "The Catherine Tate Show," and the ITV sitcom "Benidorm."
