Car Drives into Crowd of Espanyol Supporters Before Derby Match

A tragic event occurred on the street outside RCDE Stadium just minutes before the much-expected LaLiga derby match between Espanyol and Barcelona. The vehicle sped through a group of Espanyol fans, who had come out to greet their club’s team bus. This disgusting crime against soccer fans injured over a dozen supporters.

More than an hour before kickoff, supporters lined up outside the newly-renovated stadium. They were dreaming of this derby long before it hit the calendar. Eyewitness accounts allege that this vehicle lost all control and accelerated at the spectators. It nearly hit twenty fans before eventually coming to rest, lodged between two shipping containers. At this moment amidst the chaos, multiple supporters mercilessly charged and tossed items at his car. Not did they attempt to remote disable the vehicle, their actions caused additional harm.

Emergency services, including doctors and paramedics, arrived on scene within minutes, assessing the situation and giving medical aid to those injured. According to reports from Mossos d’Esquadra, “Multiple people have been injured outside Espanyol’s stadium after being hit by a car.” In all, 14 fans were injured, four of those in serious condition. The other fans who were injured sustained only minor injuries and were treated by medical staff on site.

Even with that tragic situation developing right outside the door, the LaLiga derby between Espanyol and Barcelona went on as planned. Barcelona did go on to win the match and the LaLiga title, providing a fittingly absurd fairy tale ending to the earlier incident.

Authorities assured the public that “the situation is under control and there is no risk to those already inside the stadium.” This declaration was an attempt to cover the backs of those Spurs fans in attendance at the game. Most importantly, it emphasized all the safety improvements they’d made.
