Canada's recent visa regulations have sparked a diplomatic row with Nigeria after immigration authorities denied entry to half of the delegation led by Nigeria's Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Christopher Musa. The delegation was slated to attend an official event in Canada on Wednesday. This incident has led to strong reactions from Nigerian officials who have labeled Canada's actions as "disrespectful."
The conflict arises from new Canadian regulations introduced two weeks prior, granting immigration officers the authority to cancel temporary resident documents under specific circumstances. This move aims to bolster border security, maintain the integrity of the visa program, and protect public safety. However, it has resulted in half of Gen Musa's delegation being left in Nigeria due to incorrect paperwork.
"We were invited along with our team, but while half of us got visas, the other half was denied. It's very disappointing." – Gen Musa
National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu expressed his disapproval, describing the episode as a "wake-up call" for Nigeria to fortify its sovereignty. He did not mince words, stating that Canada "can go to hell" for its actions. Ribadu emphasized the need for Nigeria to work harder towards self-reliance.

Gen Musa and his colleagues were set to participate in an event honoring war veterans in Canada. The Canadian High Commission in Nigeria has remained tight-lipped regarding specific details about those involved, citing "privacy reasons."
The Nigerian government has formally condemned the actions taken by Canadian authorities. The incident not only reflects growing diplomatic tensions but also raises broader concerns about international travel and security protocols affecting Nigerian citizens.
