BYD has unveiled its latest driver-assist system, "Dipilot," marking a significant development in the competitive landscape of China's electric vehicle (EV) market. Targeted at a diverse range of consumers, the system includes models priced below 70,000 yuan, making advanced driver-assist technology more accessible. Dipilot leverages components such as lidar from suppliers like Hesai and Nomura, focusing primarily on the Chinese market rather than international exports. As driver-assist features become crucial selling points for automakers in China, BYD is strategically positioning itself to lead this technological race.
The Dipilot system integrates advanced artificial intelligence capabilities from DeepSeek, enhancing its functionality across various BYD car models. Analysts at Nomura predict that companies supplying components for BYD's new driver-assist system could see substantial growth. In particular, BYD's Hong Kong-listed subsidiary, BYD Electronics, plays a pivotal role by manufacturing autonomous driving components. The system's introduction underscores the importance of smart driving technology in captivating the Chinese consumer base.
BYD's stock has responded positively to these developments, rising more than 30% this year to 56 HKD by Thursday's close. This increase reflects growing investor confidence in BYD's strategic direction and technological advancements. Horizon Robotics, a major supplier of smart driving chips to BYD, has also seen increased interest. Their Journey 6 chipset series is projected to expand significantly, with revenue contributions expected to grow from 3% this year to 40% by 2027.
"Meanwhile, we believe more [car manufacturers] will have to accelerate their smart driving functions upgrade in order to catch up with peers, and this may result in increasing demand for smart driving-related components in the entire auto market," – Nomura analysts
These sentiments highlight the intensifying competition among automakers to enhance smart driving functionalities, potentially boosting demand for related components across the industry.
Hesai, a key developer of lidar technology used in Dipilot, recently received a stock upgrade from Goldman Sachs from neutral to buy. This change is attributed to Hesai's promising new product cycle. However, Hesai faces challenges, including contesting U.S. government allegations regarding its alleged support for the Chinese military.
The rollout of BYD's driver-assist system has also impacted competitors; Tesla's shares notably tumbled on Tuesday following the announcement. This reaction underscores the significance of BYD's advancements in the market and its potential influence on industry dynamics.
Wang Chuanfu, BYD's founder and chairman, emphasized the importance of semiconductors in the future of electric vehicles during an event hosted by Horizon Robotics last year. His statement reinforces BYD's commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology into their vehicles, aligning with the broader industry trend towards smarter and more autonomous driving solutions.
