In a dramatic Championship decider, Burnley sealed a place in the Premier League. At the same time, Leeds United won as well, taking both clubs further toward a return to the Premier League. Burnley overcame Watford with a 2-1 triumph, while Leeds edged Oxford United 1-0, propelling them back to the top of the standings.
It was a daunting task for Burnley as they went behind to Watford early on at a brisk Vicarage Road. Zian Flemming made it 1-1 within five minutes, heading in emphatically at the end of a lightning counter-attack just before the break. This goal completely changed the momentum in favor of Burnley, allowing them to regroup and come back strong after the half.
The remainder of the second half was dominated by Burnley, who pressed hard against a fatigued Watford defense. Josh Brownhill was the hero, netting the winner in the 58th minute when he headed home from close range. Burnley would go on to briefly top the Championship standings in the days after their victory.
Watford went on to suffer an even harsher fate as key players often picked up red cards. Moussa Sissoko and Edo Kayembe were both sent off in the game. The shock expulsions had left Watford teetering on the brink at the end of the tie, giving Burnley an unexpected playoff victory.
Elsewhere, Leeds United kept up their chase for promotion with a scrappy victory over Oxford United. Forward Manor Solomon smashed home the stylish winner as he blasted a shot into the roof of the net. Just before making his move, he deftly collected an exquisite pass from Jayden Bogle. Apart from the exhilaration of having beaten a championship side, this victory moved Leeds back to the top spot of the league.
Scott Parker, head coach of Burnley, was philosophical about his team’s effort, appreciating the quality during the victory and the importance of the win.
“It’s a massive three points for us. We knew the challenge coming here; a good side, a physical team and that was proven today.” – Scott Parker
Additionally, he lauded his team’s mentality on the night, acknowledging how chippy of a match it was.
“I was pleased with our mentality and our calmness in that moment, really, because I think anyone in the stadium could see the game became very, very physical.” – Scott Parker
In addition to Burnley and Leeds, Sheffield United kept their hopes of automatic promotion alive with a convincing 2-0 victory over Cardiff City. The Championship season is upon us and it’s getting hot in here! Unsurprisingly, every fixture now takes on an increased importance with promotion and relegation payouts now on the line.
