Build the Earth Team Completes Five-Year Digital Reconstruction of London in Minecraft

An extraordinary building crew—assembled entirely through the online metaverse project Build the Earth—has recently completed an exciting five year-long endeavor. They’ve wonderfully brought to life London’s mighty architectural heritage inside of the world’s best-selling video game Minecraft. This initiative, begun in 2020, has grown tremendously within three years. It’s done an awesome job digitalizing some of the most globally recognized locations like the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace and many of London’s boroughs.

The Build the Earth community has united thousands of players from around the globe. Their overall mission is to reproduce landmarks and locations that have particular significance for local players. The UK team alone has contributed an astonishing 15,000 hours to this project over the course of the project. Their work is a testament to the amazing creativity and talent of their community. It’s an ode to one of the world’s most iconic cities.

In the beginning, the aim of the project was to digitally remake the whole globe — an undertaking that has since been dramatically dialed down. The team hopes to inspire people to reclaim and create welcoming spaces in their own communities. This creates a fierce tribalism and pride among the builders. This change marks the community’s recognition that representation close to home is every bit as crucial as representation on the international stage.

Minecraft was released in 2009 and became the best-selling computer game of all time essentially overnight. Millions of players flock to its platform to make adventures of their own and traverse sprawling cosmic realms. The creativity behind the Build the Earth project is truly impressive. It encourages participants to forge bonds and communal pride of culture by creating collectively in the digital space.

The façade’s successful recreation of London’s landmarks is a testament to the technical expertise and high level of craftsmanship exhibited by all builders. Gamers will be able to explore the time-worn architectural details of the Houses of Parliament, like the one pictured above. All will be astonished at the splendor of Buckingham Palace in this virtual London. Each creation is a unique monument to authentic history interwoven with creative liberty. This unique duality makes them remarkable repositories of culture, history, and architecture.

As the project continues to evolve and develop, the Build the Earth community remains committed to inspiring players to engage with their surroundings in a meaningful way. By inviting players to create their own home landmarks, they create a connection to local culture that makes everyone feel like they belong in the game universe.
