The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) dropped a major bombshell on Monday. Carlo Ancelotti, head coach of the Brazil national football team. With this decision, Brazilian Football reaches a landmark moment. Ancelotti will be the first foreign-domiciled coach of the storied national team. His official start date is May 26, 2025 to give him time to complete his contract with Real Madrid.
Ancelotti’s exit from Real Madrid will be announced immediately after their last league match of the season, against Real Sociedad. Needless to say, his new role has set off a tidal wave of excitement with Brazilian fans. They sorely wish to see their hometown team return to past greatness.
For Ednaldo Rodrigues, president of the CBF, this was a very important appointment. He stated, “Bringing Carlo Ancelotti to lead Brazil is more than a strategic move. It’s a statement to the world that we are determined to regain the top spot on the podium.”
Speculation about Ancelotti’s future has increased tremendously in the last few months. The pressure had reached unprecedented levels at Real Madrid following a series of sub-par performances and results. The team that had once faced elimination in the Champions League quarterfinals. Not only did they fall to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final, but they lost in the league Clásico, dashing their hopes at a LaLiga title.
Either way, Ancelotti’s second spell with Los Blancos has been nothing short of historic. He had an equally admired playing career at the club from 2009-2014, prior to his rise as head coach. That’s during his time managing the team—they’ve won three Champions League titles and two LaLiga championships under him. His contract with Real Madrid was due to expire in June of 2026. Now, his imminent transition to Brazil has become even more significant.
As a show of good faith, the CBF acknowledged Real Madrid’s role in making Ancelotti’s release from his contract easy. In a statement, they said, “The CBF extends its sincere gratitude to Real Madrid and Mr. [Florentino] Pérez for the cordiality and sportsmanship shown in facilitating the coach’s release during his contract term, allowing this new chapter to begin with mutual respect.”
With an eye on upcoming Olympic and World Cup action, expectations are loaded for Brazil’s Ancelotti-era debut. The appointment of a coach with Ancelotti’s pedigree could signify a new direction for the team, aiming to reclaim their status among football’s elite.
