Bradford City football fans are set to embark on a melodious journey, courtesy of a BBC programme titled "Bantam of the Opera." This project, cleverly named as a nod to Lord Lloyd Webber's iconic 1986 musical "The Phantom of the Opera," forms part of the Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture celebrations. The initiative aims to harness the fighting spirit of the Bantams, as Bradford City fans have been affectionately known since 1908, by teaching them to sing.
Supported by a trio of distinguished figures, the project will see football fans guided by Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, renowned opera singer Lesley Garrett, and sports commentator Chris Kamara. Chris Kamara has taken the lead in rallying singers to participate in this cultural venture. Despite his 2022 diagnosis of the speech condition apraxia, Kamara's dedication to music remains unwavering, as singing has been a steadfast part of his life through challenging times.
"This is an incredibly important year for Bradford, both the city and the football club." – Chris Kamara
The project is also a heartfelt tribute to mark the 40th anniversary of the tragic Valley Parade stadium fire, which claimed the lives of 56 supporters. This poignant remembrance adds a layer of emotional depth to the programme, underlining its significance for both the community and the football club.
Lesley Garrett emphasized the natural synergy between football and music.
"Wherever there is football, there is singing. The two go together like fish and chips, like Yorkshire pudding and gravy." – Lesley Garrett
The first performance by the newly formed choir will grace Bradford City's home game against Walsall on January 25, followed closely by another showcase against Morecambe on January 28. These performances promise to add a unique and harmonious element to the matchday experience.
Listeners can follow this musical journey on Radio Leeds, with broadcasts documenting the progress and highlights of the choir. Additionally, starting in April, fans will be able to access the programme on BBC Sounds, ensuring a wide-reaching audience for this innovative cultural initiative.
