The Babylon Art Gallery in Ely, Cambridgeshire, has announced it will permanently close in September following three decades of operation. The board of trustees informed stakeholders of the gallery's ongoing financial challenges in September 2024. These challenges have necessitated the decision to wind down operations before the final closure.
In a statement issued on the gallery's website, the board revealed that, despite efforts to secure sustainable funding through negotiations with local authorities and organizations, the financial hurdles proved insurmountable. The gallery has been a cornerstone of cultural offerings in Ely, and its closure marks the end of an era for local art enthusiasts.
To ensure that Ely's artistic spirit continues, the board is facilitating the launch of Ely Community Cinema in spring 2025.
