Arrested and Charged: New York Man Admits to Gunfire Outside Synagogue

Mufid Fawaz Alkhader, a 29-year-old resident of Schenectady, New York, pleaded guilty to multiple charges after firing shots outside Temple Israel in Albany. The incident, which occurred just hours before the start of Hanukkah in December 2023, raised alarms about public safety and religious freedom.

Alkhader was arrested shortly after the incident, having discharged two shots into the air while shouting "Free Palestine!" Witnesses reported the chaotic scene, which unfolded just 300 yards from the synagogue. His actions were deemed a direct threat to the congregation and the Jewish community at large.

The charges against Alkhader include obstructing the free exercise of religious beliefs by threat of force, brandishing a firearm during the commission of this offense, and conspiring to unlawfully purchase a firearm. Initially, he faced a separate charge related to his status as a prohibited person due to unlawful marijuana use. Following his arrest, Alkhader admitted to authorities that he and another man conspired to buy a shotgun illegally.

In November 2023, Alkhader and Andrew Miller drove to a federal firearms dealer in Albany, where Miller purchased the shotgun that would later be used in the alarming incident. Miller was sentenced in October 2024 to 14 months in prison along with three years of supervised release.

Upon his arrest, Alkhader was located in a parking lot just minutes after he fired the weapon. Throughout police interviews, he expressed that "events in the Middle East have impacted him."

U.S. Attorney Carla Freedman condemned Alkhader's actions, stating, “The defendant’s violent, antisemitic, and terrifying act targeted the Temple Israel congregation, the larger Jewish community, and the right of every person to practice their religion without fear of violence.” This statement underscores the broader implications of such acts on community safety and interfaith relations.

In addition to the charges he has already pleaded guilty to, Alkhader faces a charge for conspiracy to make a false statement during the firearm purchase days following his arrest. He has remained in federal custody since December 2023.

Alkhader’s current legal situation is severe. He faces a sentence ranging from seven years to life in prison, along with a possible five years of post-imprisonment supervised release. His sentencing is set for June 6, 2024, a date that awaits keen attention from both legal experts and community members concerned about public safety.

The incident has sparked discussions about the intersection of gun control laws, mental health issues, and religious freedom in America. As communities strive to ensure safety and uphold civil rights, cases like Alkhader's highlight the urgent need for dialogue and reform.
