Arif Aiman, one of ASEAN's promising football talents, has been showcasing his versatility on the pitch for Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT). Despite being one of the liveliest players as an attacking midfielder, he has been frequently repositioned by JDT coach Héctor Bidoglio. The tactical shifts have seen Aiman move from his attacking role to the right wing-back position, impacting his performance and position within the team dynamics.
In recent matches, Arif Aiman has demonstrated his skill as an attacking midfielder, a role where he initially thrived. However, his position was changed on Tuesday as part of JDT's tactical adjustments against Pohang Steelers. Although not his strongest position, Aiman has embraced the challenge of playing as a wing-back since the start of the year. His adaptability has been evident in his four goals in as many outings for JDT this season.
Aiman's ability to influence games was highlighted during a 2-2 draw against Shanghai Port, where he single-handedly secured a result for JDT with a brace. Yet, his transition to the wing-back position has not come without its challenges. In January, he returned to right wing-back against Central Coast Mariners, where a potential 97th-minute equaliser was denied by the linesman's flag. This setback left Aiman visibly disappointed at the final whistle, sitting on the turf in tears.
The strategic changes orchestrated by JDT coach Héctor Bidoglio have seen Aiman moved to right wing-back more often than not. Despite his initial role as one of the two spearheads alongside Jorge Obregón, he was eventually replaced by Bérgson da Silva in the starting XI. This shift reflects JDT's need for Aiman to fill wing-back positions more consistently, even though it is not where he naturally excels.
On Wednesday, Aiman faced another relegation to the right wing-back position. This ongoing adjustment process highlights the tactical flexibility required within JDT's squad and Aiman's willingness to adapt for the team's benefit. Although he may not find himself in his preferred positions as frequently as desired, Aiman continues to contribute significantly whenever called upon.
