Andrew Cuomo, the former Governor of New York, has announced his candidacy for Mayor of New York City. This announcement comes in the wake of a high-profile investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ) that concluded Cuomo had subjected at least 13 women to a "sexually hostile work environment" during his tenure. Despite claims that his office was aware of his conduct, it failed to take effective action until the allegations came to light.
The DOJ launched its investigation in August 2021, the same month Cuomo resigned from his position as Governor amid mounting allegations. In January 2024, the Justice Department reached a settlement agreement with New York State's Executive Chamber, effectively resolving claims of sexual harassment and retaliation against Cuomo.
Cuomo's entry into the mayoral race adds a new dynamic to an already competitive field. He faces incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who is currently dealing with bribery and fraud charges. Other Democratic contenders include State Senator Zellnor Myrie, city comptroller Brad Lander, State Senator Jessica Ramos, State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, former comptroller Scott Stringer, and former state Assembly member Michael Blake.
In preparation for his campaign, Cuomo has established a super political action committee named Fix the City. This committee aims to raise up to $15 million from wealthy donors to support his bid for office. According to a February poll of NYC Democratic primary voters, Cuomo appears to be favored among Democratic candidates, securing 33% support. In contrast, incumbent Mayor Eric Adams has garnered only 10% support.
Cuomo's campaign announcement highlighted his reflections on past actions and his intentions moving forward.
"Would I do some things differently, knowing what I know now? Certainly. Did I make mistakes? Some painfully, definitely, and I believe I learned from them, and that I am a better person for it, and I hope to show you that every day." – Andrew Cuomo
Mayor Eric Adams also stated his motivation for running amidst the city's current challenges.
"Our city is in crisis. That's why I am running to be Mayor of New York City," – Eric Adams
The New York City mayoral primary will take place in June, with the mayoral election scheduled for early November. As candidates gear up for the months ahead, the race promises to be closely watched given the controversies surrounding both leading candidates.
