Amy Dowden, a 34-year-old dancer from Caerphilly, has faced an arduous journey after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023. The discovery came at a particularly poignant moment—just a day before her honeymoon. Determined to preserve her dream of starting a family, Dowden underwent egg retrieval prior to commencing treatment. This proactive step has allowed her and her husband the chance to try for a baby in the future, culminating in the freezing of five embryos.
Despite her diagnosis, Dowden's commitment to dance has remained unwavering. Although she was forced to sit out of performing with a celebrity dance partner in 2023, her passion for the craft remains evident. She was paired with JLS singer JB Gill in the most recent series of "Strictly Come Dancing," but an unexpected injury led to her withdrawal from the competition. She clarified that this setback was unrelated to her previous health challenges.
In February 2024, tests revealed that she had "no evidence of disease," marking a significant milestone in her recovery. Dowden shared her journey through fertility treatment in a BBC documentary titled "Strictly Amy: Cancer And Me," where she candidly expressed her aspirations for motherhood.
"We would love a family and we've got embryos, because, obviously, I've got a hormone-fed cancer so I was put into menopause, which happened the day I started chemo," Amy Dowden shared.
The past year has been described as a "rollercoaster" for Dowden and her loved ones. Her resilience and determination have inspired many, including her mother, who expressed profound gratitude for her daughter's presence.
"Last year, I said to you we were going to come and watch and to be honest with you, the fact you're still here is everything," said Amy Dowden's mum.
Looking ahead, Dowden is set to perform alongside JB Gill during the "Strictly" live tour, which begins later this month. Despite the hurdles she has overcome, she remains hopeful about returning to perform fully in the coming years when it is deemed safe.
