Amanda Palmer, the ex-wife of acclaimed author Neil Gaiman, has firmly denied allegations of negligence and human trafficking. The accusations were made by a woman who previously worked for the couple. The woman claims she was befriended by Palmer at the age of 22 when she was homeless. Concurrently, Neil Gaiman faces serious allegations of sexual misconduct from eight different women, including claims of sexual assault.
The allegations against Gaiman and Palmer have escalated into civil lawsuits filed in the United States. The lawsuits accuse the former couple of breaching federal human trafficking laws and include claims of assault, battery, and infliction of emotional distress against Gaiman, along with negligence charges aimed at Palmer. Both Gaiman and Palmer have categorically denied the accusations.
"never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever" – Neil Gaiman
Gaiman and Palmer, who announced their divorce in 2022, had been married since 2011 and share a son. Despite the legal challenges, they have expressed a commitment to co-parenting. Their separation was publicized through a joint statement emphasizing their intention to remain supportive co-parents. The couple's divorce, however, does not shield them from the mounting legal issues stemming from these allegations.
The repercussions of these allegations have been swift and significant. A UK stage adaptation of Gaiman's popular book "Coraline" was pulled following the allegations, and Dark Horse Comics has canceled upcoming projects with him. The accusations were first brought to light in an article by New York Magazine, where four of the eight women accusing Gaiman spoke publicly about their experiences.
Palmer has chosen not to respond to each specific allegation but has publicly denied any wrongdoing.
"With that as my priority, I will not respond to the specific allegations being made against me except to say that I deny the allegations and will respond in due course. My heart goes out to all survivors." – Amanda Palmer
In her statement, Palmer also emphasized her need for privacy during this challenging time and reiterated her focus on protecting her young child.
"I thank you all deeply for continuing to respect my recent request for privacy as I navigate this extremely difficult moment. I must protect my young child and his right to privacy." – Amanda Palmer
