Tiffany Slaton, a missing 27-year-old woman from Jeffersonville, Georgia, was discovered alive after going missing for two weeks. Her family lost contact with her on April 29. After nine days of silence, they became more and more worried about her safety. A massive search across more than 600 square miles of California’s rugged Sierra Nevada mountains was initiated to find her.
The search effort started after her father, Bobby Slaton, was the one to alert authorities that she was missing. He described Tiffany as someone who typically responds to calls daily, stating, “Eso no es típico de nuestra hija; siempre responde al menos una o dos veces al día.” This strange silence inspired her family to contact the authorities, and that ultimately spurred an exhaustive statewide search operation.
Search Efforts
Authorities and volunteers conducted an extensive search over four days, focusing on the rugged terrain of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The searchers hiked and kayaked around Lake Edison where Tiffany was last known to be. Even in the most grueling conditions, their spirits could not be broken as they fought day and night to rescue her.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the owner of Vermilion Valley Resort was surveying damage on the property. It was on this inspection that they first discovered Tiffany stowed away inside one of the cabins. While she did show symptoms of dehydration, she otherwise checked out in great health.
Tiffany’s Adventure
Travel blogger Tiffany Slaton had previously challenged herself to visit all 50 states in the U.S. California was towards the end of her states list. Her father mentioned, “Mi hija ama conocer personas nuevas. No conoce extraños, así que esta fue una oportunidad perfecta para ella.” This ambition to go where the waves took her drove her adventure and perhaps put her feet on the shores of California.
Her family’s relief to have her back is evident. Most eye-opening is the anxiety they went through while she was gone. As Tiffany heals from her traumatic experience, her new caretakers hope her joyful sense of fun will always be a part of her.
Community Support
The community’s response during the search reflected a strong network of support for Tiffany’s family. She was eventually found thanks to local responders and a dedicated crew of volunteers and community members unified, proving the power of community unity in times of crisis. The cooperative and collaborative nature of the search efforts was key to understanding how they were saved.
