Eurovision 2025 Promises Excitement with “Welcome Home” Theme and Historic Participation

Production & Theme The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) produced this year’s edition under the motto “Welcome Home.” It hopes to create a sense of togetherness and connection with the world for both marchers and audiences. A total of 37 countries will compete for the coveted title, showcasing a diverse array of musical styles and cultural expressions.

The Grand Prix finale on May 17, 2025 would be staged under the gleam of night lights, with the title race televised live across the globe. We’ll have each country display their submissions. They are subjected to sometimes draconian competition rules that require live lead vocals, prohibiting lip-syncing and auto-tuning. The contest prides itself on gritty realism. Each performance can feature no more than six male singers and dance performers on stage simultaneously.

Though Eurovision likes to claim it is politically neutral, the song contest has been no stranger to the geopolitical firestorm. In 2022, Israel’s representative Eden Golan faced violent protests outside of his rehearsals. Thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters filled the venue’s courtyard, demanding justice for Palestine. It was an unexpected turn that quickly became explosive. Golan was forced to change her song “Hurricane” to remove mentions of the attacks by Hamas that killed over 1,100 Israeli citizens in October. This incident serves as a reminder to all how fragile a balance Eurovision must walk between art and highly complex political landscapes.

The competition has been under tremendous pressure to remove Israel from participation. In light of this pressure, Israel has not withdrawn from the EBU. Additionally, Russia has been disqualified from the contest since 2022 due to its attack on Ukraine. This precarious reality further illuminates the increasing political volatility that Eurovision continues to experience within its member states.

Montenegro will return to Eurovision 2025 after not competing since Eurovision 2022. They’ll be replacing Moldova in this equally bizarre but pretty cool event. As you can imagine, the excitement around the event is palpable. Fans can’t wait to experience the new and exciting acts from returning innovators and debuting artists alike!

France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom—the “big five” nations—will also automatically qualify for the final. Their increased monetary subsides to Eurovision have bought them this. This provision means that these powerful countries are featured most prominently on stage during the event’s closing, climactic moments.

International artist Céline Dion, the 1988 winner of the Eurovision Song Contest for Switzerland, recorded a touching pre-event video message. She recently welcomed the contest’s homecoming to Basel with great enthusiasm. Her participation further amplifies the importance of this year’s event and brings a touch of nostalgia for veteran Eurovision fans.

With expectations high, Nemo prepares to deliver the goods as a headlining guest. This, after he had previously critised Eurovision’s lack of support for artists ahead of 2024. His presence is indicative of a bigger trend. Veteran artists are making their voices heard in the contest and fighting for increased visibility and support for their fellow artists.

The voting system remains unchanged from previous years, with the most popular song receiving 12 points and the second choice garnering 10 points. Subsequent entries will be scored from eight down to one. This scoring process is important for maintaining competitive parity. It further increases general interest and participation from national juries and from audiences across Europe.

Beyond the spectacle, Eurovision 2025 has an important opportunity to support solidarity and connection amidst the diversity of its participants. The theme “Welcome Home” serves as a reminder of the shared experiences that music can create, transcending borders and differences. Supporters can’t wait for what will surely be a magical evening! Their excitement is palpable as they look forward to electrifying performances and bringing joy-filled connections to the audiences at this legendary festival.
