Indeed, the race for Champions League qualification in top-flight football is heating up! From Newcastle to Nottingham, England’s top clubs are locked in a battle for qualification to Europe’s biggest football showdown.
Manchester City 91.2%
Arsenal 99.7%
Manchester City has a 91.2% chance of qualification, and Arsenal’s got pretty much a lock at 99.7%. With the season moving towards its end, all eyes are on teams’ last few matchups that will decide their future.
Manchester City, currently sitting in a secure position, has two fixtures left: they will host Bournemouth before traveling to Fulham. Though they were in the driver’s seat, Pep Guardiola called for no lack of resolve. “We’ve got to battle all the way to the end,” he said, underscoring the belief that every game will be important.
Arsenal, all but guaranteed to advance, has a taxing slate to come. Wolverhampton’s last three matches comprise a pivotal away match against Liverpool, then home matches against Newcastle and Southampton. As Unai Emery recently articulated in an interview, that’s a difficult task with the competition level in the Premier League. In my eyes, the Champions League is the premier competition in world football. To qualify through the Premier League, as we know it’s extremely hard with many teams performing extremely strong,” he said.
Liverpool’s path to securing their Champions League spot includes three crucial matches: a home game against Arsenal, followed by away matches against Brighton and Crystal Palace. The team has shown resilience and determination to reclaim their place among Europe’s elite.
Newcastle United occupies the seventh spot in the league and has three fixtures remaining: they will face Chelsea at home, followed by an away match against Arsenal and a home game against Everton. Their performance in these matches could see them qualify for either the Champions League or the Europa League, depending on how other results pan out.
Chelsea also remains in contention, with three fixtures left: they will travel to Newcastle before hosting Manchester United and Nottingham Forest. The Blues are similarly excited about their upcoming Europa League final versus Real Betis on May 21. The result of this match will go on to greatly affect their European aspirations.
Aston Villa to play in Europe next season! They still have two very important matches in hand to play against Tottenham and Manchester United. Unai Emery remarked on Villa’s determination, stating, “We are going to fight for it. First objective clearly is to qualify for Europe again, and we’ve achieved that today.”
Brentford, Brighton, Bournemouth and Fulham are all in a dogfight for eighth! Such a position would qualify them for a place in the improved Conference League. Thomas Frank of Brentford noted, “We have got the momentum which is important,” highlighting his team’s focus on finishing strong in the league.
As the season progresses, we hope to see nine English teams playing in European competitions next year. This is predominantly an impressive Champions League sextet! This portrays the increasing competitiveness of English football on the world level.
