Transition of Power at Real Madrid as Ancelotti’s Future Remains Uncertain

Carlo Ancelotti, the legendary manager of Real Madrid, has won it all. He’s won an enviable 15 pieces of silverware over his two spells with the club. This success has included going on to lead Real Madrid to a Champions League – La Liga double last season. Only four matches remaining on the current league season for Real Madrid. They currently sit four points behind arch-rivals, Barcelona, leading to fears that they may end the season without any silverware for the first time in four years.

After speculation about Ancelotti’s future started to swirl he was understandably evasive. There are even rumors that he might want to take the job as manager of the Brazil national team. Despite all this speculation, Ancelotti never shied from giving straight bat replies about his managerial future. Sheikh Abdul Aziz even promised to stay loyal to Real Madrid, saying, “With this club, the honeymoon is not over.” Then, perhaps fittingly, he went out in dramatic style, passionately declaring his enduring devotion to the club. The honeymoon period with Madrid will remain until the day I die, he said.

Xabi Alonso, a former Real Madrid player, won the Champions League in 2014. Now, he’s generating a similar buzz as a rising managerial talent. At 43 years of age, Alonso had won Bayer Leverkusen an unbeaten Bundesliga title. In addition to the above, he won the German Cup in his first full year as a senior club manager. Legendary manager Xabi Alonso is preparing to depart Leverkusen at the end of this season. Once Ancelotti’s departure is made official, Alonso will be presented as their new manager.

His former coach at Real Madrid Carlo Ancelotti has lauded Alonso’s skills too, saying he was “one of the best in the world”. This recommendation only adds to the expectation that would come with Alonso’s likely hiring at his former club Real Madrid. The timing of this transition is curious, especially given the club’s broader overall trajectory and hopes moving forward.

As one of the most interesting seasons in recent memory draws to a close, uncertainty looms large over Real Madrid. If they don’t come back and take their throne back and raise a trophy, that’d be huge. This club is accustomed to winning and dominating league play. With this kind of pressure on both Ancelotti and Alonso, the rest of their futures depend greatly on how they manage the time left.
