EU Prepares for Potential Trade Consequences Amid U.S. Tariff Disputes

On May 7, 2025, Maros Sefcovic, the EU’s Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, addressed reporters in Singapore. This announcement came on the heels of the historic signature of the EU-Singapore Digital Trade Agreement (DTA). This accord strengthens digital economic cooperation between the European Union and Singapore. It is a major step forward in the state of international affairs in regard to trade and relations there.

Here at this news conference, Sefcovic addressed the EU’s escalating trade war with the United States. He reiterated that negotiations with Washington are still a top priority, but not at all costs. His comments come right as the EU is evidently preparing to unveil additional retaliatory measures. These new measures will counteract U.S. tariffs, including a 25% tax on foreign automobiles and on imported steel and aluminum.

“Negotiations clearly come first but not at any cost,” Sefcovic stated, underlining the EU’s strategic approach to resolving trade disputes. The European Commission has been very glad to take a “laser-focused approach” in pursuing an amicably negotiated solution. Sefcovic recognized the importance of having fallback plans in place should European-U.S. negotiations prove unsuccessful in the end.

On the one hand, these discussions are framed by the specter of previous tariff attacks unleashed by former President Trump. He started the ball rolling by slapping a 20% “reciprocal” tariff on all products originating in the EU. In April 2025, Trump agreed to a 90-day hold on these measures during negotiations, lowering the duty to 10%. The current tariffs still pose significant challenges for European exporters.

Sefcovic indicated that the EU is diligently preparing for any scenario that might arise from the trade talks. He remarked, “We are working very closely with our member states, consulting industry, talking to our key stakeholders to ensure we are ready for whatever comes next.” This forward-looking approach brings into focus the EU’s desire to protect its economic interests in the face of unpredictable trade currents.

Sefcovic is expected to reveal more details about the EU’s proposed countermeasures to U.S. tariffs. Tune in to his update on Thursday to get the full scoop! The story behind these tariffs illustrates the tangled web of international trade relationships. The EU’s ambition is to be the one that successfully steers through these challenges.
