Temple University Student Suspended Following Antisemitic Sign Incident

By announcing that Temple University has suspended one of its students. This decision follows the student’s alleged role in a now-viral incident that sparked national fury over antisemitism on campus. On Saturday, May 3, this string of events turned into violence inside a gay bar on Sansom Street. Patrons were confronted by a sign that infamously read, “(expletive) the Jews.” The Philadelphia Police Department is still investigating the incident.

Officer Miguel Torres, a spokesman for the department, confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing to USA TODAY on May 5. We’re following along as news and developments continue to emerge. The ordering of the offensive sign, reportedly done with one’s friends while doing bottle service at the bar, included pulling words from a menu-like list to add to large signs.

The Anti-Defamation League of Philadelphia denounced the incident, calling for accountability and education about antisemitism. In a thread on X, the organization explained just how violent these actions are. They highlighted that effect on community safety and social cohesion.

Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports and a notable Jewish man, weighed on the matter as well. He shared the clip on X/X on Sunday to underscore why we need education about antisemitism. Portnoy initially characterized the incident as a possible “teachable moment.” He went on to say that those who ordered the sign have made a pledge to go on an educational trip to Germany and Auschwitz to learn about history and the resulting devastation caused by hate.

“In the strongest terms possible, let me be clear: antisemitism is abhorrent,” – Temple University President John Fry.

Temple University strongly condemns all acts of hatred and discrimination. They are reminding everyone that this type of behavior will not be accepted on their campus.
