This is the first picture we’ve ever seen of Audrey Backeberg, who went missing from her hometown of Reedsburg, Wisconsin, 62 years ago. Local governments and state authorities have validated this remarkable story. Backeberg was only 20 years old when she went missing July 7, 1962. This ended with picking up her paycheck that day, the last time anyone closely associated with her ever saw her.
At the time of her disappearance, Backeberg was a mother of two young children. Naturally, her unexpected absence set off alarms. This concern grew after reports of alleged long-term abuse by her husband surfaced just days before she vanished. When Backeberg’s husband then allegedly threatened her life on July 4, 1962, he hastily applied for a divorce the next year. This decision followed only a year after she mysteriously disappeared.
Disappearance and Speculation
Backeberg’s disappearance has been a mystery for more than half a century. According to testimony, she had supposedly been planning to elope with a 14-year-old girl she had been babysitting. This was so convincing that investigators concluded. It persuaded them that her leaving was of her own accord and not connected to any malicious activity or foul play.
Over the years, officials pursued more than 100 other viable leads. In May 2002, based on an informant’s tip that the property might be Backeberg’s burial site, investigators zeroed in on a parcel in Sauk County. At the time, they just weren’t finding the evidence. The case remained cold for decades. By this time in early 2025, the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office had stepped up and re-assigned it a detective to give it another look.
“We don’t know if she’s simply a missing person living a life somewhere else,” said Sheriff Stammen regarding the complexities surrounding Backeberg’s case.
Life After Disappearance
While details of Backeberg’s life post-disappearance remain unclear, acquaintances have shared insights into her potential mindset during that time. As one friendly observer commented, Backeberg appears to have really gone after the independence and the new beginning.
“I think she just was removed and … moved on from things and kind of did her own thing and led her life,” the acquaintance stated.
Another friend added that when she last talked to Backeberg after she’d gone missing, she seemed happy about her decisions.
“She sounded happy. Confident in her decision. No regrets,” the acquaintance added.
These comments suggest that Backeberg was willfully trying to avoid and evade her woes in Wisconsin. She might have consciously done this, purposefully doing the work required to create her new life.
Discovery and Current Status
The sheriff’s office has refused to say what state Backeberg now lives in. On Friday, authorities announced that she had been found safe. Cold case Detectives… Detective Isaac Hanson told Washington’s Fox 13 News that systematic investigations are key to solving cold cases such as hers.
“That was pretty key in locating death records, census reports, all kinds of data,” he explained regarding the methods used to eventually track down Backeberg.
