Max Verstappen, the 27-year-old four-time Formula 1 champ, recently had a daughter, Lily. He posted the happy announcement with his girlfriend, Kelly Piquet. He learned about it just minutes before heading into the paddock of the Miami Grand Prix. This is a topic area where he’s found huge bipartisan success in recent years. As the daughter of three-time F1 world champion Nelson Piquet, Kelly joins her older brother’s legacy to their family.
Verstappen, who recently became a father, opened up about that experience and what it’s like bringing home a newborn and feeling that rush of love and excitement. “You never really know what to expect, but it’s been very enjoyable, and for sure very special,” he remarked. He emphasized the importance of family time, stating, “Luckily, I got to spend a few days with them when she was born.”
With this new addition, their family now includes Piquet’s six-year-old daughter from a previous relationship. For Verstappen, this means being something of a supportive parent in her life. “I’m kind of a bonus dad already. I’ve watched her grow up from one year old,” he remarked.
Balancing his responsibilities as a parent and a racing driver, Verstappen has always touted the benefits of a good night’s sleep for optimal performance on the track. And sleep has been great to be completely honest. Soon, I got the very disappointing news that I would be arriving too late in Miami. Since we were going against the grain of time zones, I’ve already gotten eight hours of sleep. It’s been good,” he said.
As he prepares for the Miami Grand Prix, Verstappen continues to hone in on his off-track career. He’s the winner of the first two runnings of this race, in 2022 and 2023. His current deal with Red Bull Racing is through 2028. Throughout his career he has been the toast of these victories with an incredible 64 race wins!
Outside the rigors of competition, Verstappen finds relaxation through video gaming—specifically racing simulators and Call of Duty. Recognizing the needs of family life while competing in the fierce and demanding world of professional motorsport is key as he straddles both lines.
