Leicester City Break Home Scoring Drought with Victory Over Southampton

Leicester City finally ended their five-month home scoring drought! It was capped off with a dramatic comeback 2-1 win against Southampton at the King Power Stadium. Leicester danced on the pontoon for the fifth time this season, with their points tally now up to 21. They remain 19th in the Premier League table.

What a brilliant start to the match for Leicester! Then, in the 17th minute, Jamie Vardy took it to 199 goals for the club. This was quite the goal to be Leicester’s target. It was their first home league goal in five months. Their most recent goal at the King Power Stadium came on December 8, 2022. It occurred during a thrilling 2-2 home draw versus Brighton & Hove Albion.

Jordan Ayew had a huge moment in the 44th minute with a wonderful free-kick goal that made it 1-0. His beautifully curled free kick ensured Southampton drew level on the 75th minute. Leicester stood firm and held on for the victory, though Southampton’s relegation worries continued to deepen. The defeat left Southampton languishing on just 11 points. With just three matches remaining, they are in a serious fight to avoid being among the worst teams in Premier League history.

Referee David Webb also sustained a head injury, resulting in a rare delay while Webb was treated. This personal incident unfortunately resulted in a 12-minute stoppage during the first half. For Webb, 49, this was a first Premier League match as an official. Nevertheless, due to his injury, he was eventually replaced.

Prior to this game, Leicester’s lack of goals had reached an all time low. They set a negative record as the first team in the top four tiers of English soccer to go nine consecutive home games without scoring a single goal. Vardy would open up about the increasing mental pressure in the wake of the news that he would be leaving Leicester City after the Premier League season. This decision served to layer emotional notes over top of his club’s final moments.

In a controversial moment, Mateus Fernandes had his goal disallowed for offside. This blow dealt another blow to any hopes Southampton had of pursuing that equalizer. For all their courageous battle, Southampton just weren’t able to take those opportunities.
