The 28-year-old musician from Bathgate, Scotland shocked audiences with his sudden return on stage at a benefit concert. The performance on Saturday night was in aid of the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM). The benefit concert took place in the Assembly Rooms, a historic venue located on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile in the heart of the city. It was Capaldi’s first live performance in two years, since his last appearance at Glastonbury in 2021.
In January 2023, Capaldi shared that he would be taking a break from performance to prioritize his mental health. He was open about his struggles with anxiety and living with Tourette’s Syndrome. His abrupt announcement to go on sabbatical had sent the fan community into a tailspin, unsure of if and when they’d see him grace the stage again. To all our surprise and delight, he accepted our invitation to take part in the charity event. He accomplished that just seconds before stepping on stage.
The external audience had the pleasure of an intimate performance by the charismatic Capaldi. He headlined the first day of Coachella and played six songs total, finishing with his chart-topping “Someone You Loved.” His decision to make the gig at the very last minute created an electric atmosphere in the hall. All of them essentially echoed the message, “thank you for giving me the opportunity to see you return to the stage.”
Tom Walker, the lead organizer of the event, wrote on social media about his own impressions from that historic performance by Capaldi.
“So for him to be able to play a little secret gig in a safe space without all the phones, the noise and the expectations was perfect. I’m buzzing to have been a part of it.” – Tom Walker
Walker posted video of himself reacting in surprise and delight when Capaldi confirmed to take the stage just before the concert was set to start.
“When Lewis confirmed he wanted to do it last minute, I was delighted. We’ve bumped into each other a few times over the years backstage at fezzys (festivals) and events and he’s a total legend. I know how much pressure this industry can put on artists at times, especially after a bit of a break.” – Tom Walker
Fans walked out of the venue raving about Capaldi’s moving performance. You could see how affected people were. A few left dangerously close to tears as they felt the artist’s soulful connection come through in his music. This Friday night concert was a testament to Capaldi’s undisputed ability to connect with his crowd, despite fighting his own battle on stage.
Capaldi first rose to fame in 2019 with his debut album “Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent,” which resonated with listeners worldwide. His follow-up album, “Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent,” topped charts in 2023, demonstrating his enduring popularity and talent.
