Mike Waltz Nominated as UN Ambassador Amid Controversy

Among them, President Donald Trump has nominated former National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. He has been nominated to be the next United States Ambassador to the United Nations. Now at 51 years old, Waltz was expecting to attract far less scrutiny after departing the National Security Council. At that time, he had just stepped down after having represented another Florida district in the House of Representatives.

Waltz’s nomination follows fallout from a December chat thread on the encrypted Signal messaging app. This last thread was apparently used by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to announce sensitive U.S. military plans. The issue blew up into a full-blown scandal in recent weeks, forcing many to speculate on the fate of Waltz’s future as the President’s National Security Advisor. His exit wasn’t made public until hours after news outlets from Politico to New York Times had picked up the story of the developing scandal.

In a statement announcing Waltz’s nomination, Trump hailed confidence in his abilities.

“From his time in uniform on the battlefield, in Congress and, as my National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our Nation’s Interests first. I know he will do the same in his new role,” – Donald Trump

Waltz’s departure from his former office turned key after his meeting with a Ukrainian delegation. This meeting was held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on March 11, 2025. During this riveting meeting, Waltz, especially in conjunction with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, addressed pivotal subjects facing our global community. A portrait of the two leaders during this historic engagement was recorded by Saul Loeb and circulated through the Reuters newswire.

Rumors of Waltz resigning from his position had been floating around prior to the official announcement. This created serious concerns about its likely negative implications for U.S. foreign policy and national security. Rubio’s National Security Advisor, interim plan of Trump administration. Most importantly, he’d continue to hold the hammer over at State.

“In the interim, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will serve as National Security Advisor, while continuing his strong leadership at the State Department. Together, we will continue to fight tirelessly to Make America, and the World, SAFE AGAIN. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” – Donald Trump

Waltz’s nomination would follow Trump’s first choice to fill the U.N. ambassador spot— Rep. Elise Stefanik —skating past both GOP diversity and experience goals. That nomination was subsequently withdrawn. This transition represents a fundamental change in leadership and vision. It arrives at a timely moment as U.S. foreign relations face pressure from multiple fronts.
