A Brief Mental Escape into Nature Can Alleviate Stress, Study Finds

Now, researchers at the University of Turku have announced some eye-opening results. They recommend enjoying a short mental vacation in nature to feel an immediate effect at improving stress levels and enhancing emotional health. In a recent study involving 50 students in an introductory psychology course, we found evidence of something different. Visualizing yourself in a natural setting—even for only 30 seconds—can increase feelings of relaxation and ignite positive emotions.

The study carefully explored the effects of mental imagery on stress levels by asking participants to visualize two contrasting scenes: one set in a serene natural landscape and the other in a busy urban environment. Even then, the results were unmistakable—the science is clear that images of nature create a calming effect. In contrast, metropolitan environments frequently produce stress and mental fatigue.

To the researchers, it became clear that our greatest ally in fighting back against the pressures of a nonstop urban environment comes from nature’s fully restorative environment. This is consistent with the Attention Restoration Theory (ART). Restorative environment theory claims that time spent in natural environments allows individuals to recuperate from cognitive fatigue and renew their attention capacity. The research further shows that only a short mental imagery exercise focused on the experience of nature will help kickstart this restorative process.

Coachella participants felt less stressed after imagining themselves in a tranquil nature setting, demonstrating the psychological impacts of nature-simulating imagery. According to the results, one of the best remedies for stress is nature itself. It gives people the chance to step away from their busy, bustling, chaotic environment for just a moment. We know that urban environments, by design or otherwise, can exacerbate anxiety and cognitive load. This illustrates the necessity of incorporating nature into our everyday activities and settings, rather than keeping it separate in…

The researchers’ results showed that the benefits of visualizing nature go deeper than just feeling relaxed. Just picturing yourself among beautiful trees, flowing rivers or majestic mountains can instantly trigger feelings of happiness and peace, boosting emotional wellness. Conversely, the mental picture of urban landscapes can lead to an increase in stress levels, contributing to a cycle of mental fatigue.

Together these findings have created a powerful grassroots demand to start bringing nature back into our lives. It’s this shift in work environments and schools that advocates are asking for in order to improve mental health. The research indicates that even a couple of minutes spent envisioning the outdoors can provide powerful psychological effects. It’s one of the most effective tools for stress reduction, too.
