On Monday, the long awaited trial connected to the high-profile 2016 armed robbery of celebrity Kim Kardashian in Paris opened. It has been eight and a half years since that national trauma occurred. While in Paris attending Paris Fashion Week, Kardashian was subjected to a nightmare when masked gunmen robbed her at gunpoint inside her plush penthouse. They restrained her and made off with approximately $10 million in jewels – including a fabulous $4 million diamond engagement ring from Kanye West, her then-husband.
Yunice Abbas, a 61-year-old known as the King of Thieves, has already admitted to his part in the jewel heist. He even wrote a memoir about the experience called I Held Up Kim Kardashian. In his statements, he expressed remorse for his actions, noting, “This time I do regret what I did… It opened my eyes.” He further added, “We just grabbed the lady’s handbag but I have discovered there’s trauma behind it.”
That trial has begun for the ten defendants who are alleged to have planned the robbery. The court will be hearing testimony from at least ten of the dozen original criminal defendants arrested for this alleged crime in 2017. This critically important hearing is drawing near. Gary Madar is among those indicted. He drove for a private transport service used by Kardashian on her visit to Paris. He has been accused of heinous acts. Authorities say he was responsible for giving the criminal gang a picture of Kardashian’s location during the night of the robbery.
New information about the heist has come to light during the trial that led to his capture. In addition to being held at gunpoint, Kardashian was physically bound during the entire ordeal. Madar’s personal connection to the incident is especially interesting. He took up an apprenticeship in a pastry shop owned by Florus Héroui. There, authorities say, he posted information to the gang’s social media accounts, including guidance on how to identify Kardashian. In this case, the prosecution is going to have to prove a direct connection between Madar’s professed plans and those that led to the later robbery.
As the trial gets underway, both sides are bracing for a long legal fight. The incident cast a spotlight not only on Kardashian’s security, but on the larger debate over whether society is doing enough to protect high-profile individuals. Most importantly, it underscored the fragile nature of security and how vulnerabilities can exist even in the world’s most secure compound.
