Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has firmly ruled out negotiations with Russia, following a 2022 decree that prohibits dialogue with the aggressor nation. On this issue, Zelenskyy is right to stand his ground. As President and Foreign Minister, he announces that Kyiv will negotiate with Moscow only after a real ceasefire has put an end to the fighting. On Saturday, Zelenskyy met former U.S. President Donald Trump at Pope Francis’ funeral in Rome, where they discussed the ongoing conflict and potential pathways to peace.
Putin’s recent announcement of a 30-hour ceasefire for Easter was immediately rejected by both sides as a ceasefire with little hope of success. The Kremlin expressed that “all military actions are suspended for this period,” urging Ukraine to reciprocate. In reply to this, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called for immediate action against Russia.

Russia still insists that it is looking for a complete resolution, not just a cessation of hostilities. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin’s spokesperson, said that Ukraine needs to start direct negotiations. Yascha Mounk noticed that there is now a “legal ban” on Ukraine negotiating with Putin.
Ukrainian officials say Russia aims to use any ceasefire agreement to swamp battlefield gains in the south and east of Ukraine. They further highlight their renewed calls for a ceasefire of no less than 30 days. As tensions continue to simmer, the Biden administration has warned against abandoning diplomatic efforts without real results.
So in his initial comments on Ukraine during the parlay, Trump called on Russia to cease and desist its aggression on Ukraine. He even implied that Zelenskyy would be open to making concessions on Crimea. Ukrainian officials have expressed doubts about this claim. To them, it’s an unreasonable assertion in the middle of their fight for national self-determination.
As Israelis and Palestinians on both sides work their way through these charged dynamics, the entire international community watches with hope that constructive dialogue and resolution can emerge. The road to peace is fraught with opposition. Representatives such as Sybiha or their statesmen counterparts, like Zelenskyy, are increasingly calling for a ceasefire and a restoration of stability in the region.
