At a White House press briefing on April 29, 2025, U.S. Additionally, he disclosed that the United States is nearing completion of a trade agreement with India. We put out this statement to coincide with President Donald Trump’s 100th day in office. It gives color to that period’s major shifts in U.S. trade relationships.
Bessent said that trading relationships with 17 other partners are now “in action,” specifically leaving China off of this number. Moreover he pointed out amazing progress in the negotiations with India. He implied that an announcement on a new or updated trade deal could be forthcoming.
In his remarks, Bessent noted, “I think that we are very close on India.” He underscored that India could become one of the first countries to ink a trade agreement with the U.S. Realizing this potential would produce tremendous opportunities for both countries. He elaborated on the advantages of negotiating with India, stating, “A country like India, which has the posted and ready tariffs, it’s much easier to negotiate with them.”
The briefing came to life in the Brady Briefing Room at the White House in Washington, D.C. There, Bessent provided some important background on how the U.S. formulates its international trade strategy. He indicated that many of the 17 partners have already visited Washington for discussions and that efforts will intensify in the coming weeks.
“We have 18 important trading relationships, we will be speaking to all of those partners, or at least 17 of them, over the next few weeks, many of them have already come to Washington,” – Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
