Cam Ward, one of the best quarterbacks in the country this year from University of Miami has been in the news. The Tennessee Titans drafted him with the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft! It was the last incredible accomplishment for him after a sensational senior year at Miami. There, he broke his own single-season records for passing yards and touchdowns. His rise from a zero-star recruit to the first overall pick in the NFL Draft exemplifies that amazing ability. It showcases his fighting spirit, unparalleled drive, and tireless work ethic.
In his last season at Miami, Ward passed for an astounding 4,313 yards and threw 39 touchdown passes, showcasing his exceptional skills on the field. His incredible accomplishments earned him considerable fame. He even won the distinguished Jerry Rice Award, given to the best FCS freshman. He earned the highly-coveted Davey O’Brien Award, awarded to the nation’s best quarterback. This remarkable accomplishment cements his place as one of the all-time greats in college football.
Ward endured many obstacles even with those great accomplishments. He had previously signed with the 2024 NFL Draft. Except, after hearing from the council, he changed course after getting the impression that he would be no better than a mid-round selection. This ended up being a key career move for him.
Ward had a lot of success in his three seasons at Washington State. He made the switch there to join coach Eric Morris, who had been hired as the Cougars’ offensive coordinator. During that period, his last two seasons in a row, he had a 65.5% completion percentage and threw for 6,698 yards with 48 touchdowns. Week 6’s exhilarating and unforgettable shootout against Cal might have cemented his legacy. Even after a tough start, he demonstrated extraordinary poise under pressure and carried his team to an exhilarating 39-38 come-from-behind win.
Ward’s spectacular campaign would culminate in him finishing fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting. This accomplishment only serves to emphasize his playmaking ability as a quarterback. None of that’s to diminish the truly promotional and equally impressive accolade he earned. On top of that, he earned an All-Pac-12 honorable mention in 2022 and 2023.
Colbert, Ward’s own personal quarterback coach, was instrumental in his growth. Ward gave him credit for getting and keeping him focused on his goals. He molded him to be a winner in the pocket. I feel like he’s one of the main reasons I’m on track to be where I needed to be football-wise. Ward noted the impact of J. Colberts.
Ward’s former coach Callahan put a strong emphasis on his leadership abilities, as well as his intuition for bringing out the best in his teammates. It’s not the leadership qualities per se, but rather “the leadership ability and the way he’s able to make those around him better,” he elaborated. Callahan underscored the point with a small parade of players who found great success at the position. Only a handful possess that rarest of gifts, the ability to communicate intimately with their fellow players.
Ward’s accomplishments and records are deserving of statues and hall of fames. Those who have seen his professional development up close are impressed by his belief in himself and a tireless work ethic. Quandre Diggs remarked on Ward’s natural confidence and dedication to improving his game: “He’s always had confidence, a natural chip on his shoulder. It’s because he works hard. As you might observe, given that from the time he was a little boy.”
Ward’s tenure at Miami was far from perfect. He reflected on his first game against Cal and recalled going through some early adversity. He always focused on how he recovered, overcame, and brought home the championship. “Against Cal, a lot of my worst plays,” Ward said. “I got back into the game and I was able to make some key plays in the second half. That’s what brought us across the finish line to win!”
As he looks ahead to his professional career with the Titans, Ward remains optimistic and confident about what lies ahead. He conveyed a strong message during the draft process: “If you don’t draft me, that’s your fault,” he asserted. Don’t forget, you’re the same group that’s going to lose to me the next 15 years of my career. I will never have that taken away from me.
