Elizabeth and Letitia, two sisters from West Sussex. Now, they are truly putting their bond to the test, as they compete against six other pairs of contestants in the fifth series of the reality show “Race Across the World.” Their team is in a tight race with four other dynamic teams. They are traveling by land from China to India over 8,700 miles (14,000 kilometers) without taking a single flight or even using a smartphone. Though exhilarating, this extraordinary journey is sure to test their bond and reveal the tenacity within them.
The sisters, 33 and 26—their ages at the time of the trip—started their journey at remarkable Great Wall of China. Their journey will take them across beautiful and varied terrains and cultures in China, Nepal, and India. The competition rules prohibit them from using anything other than the cash equivalent of a short-haul airfare. This holds true for the travel mode between starting and ending locations. This is what requires Elizabeth and Letitia to get by through their ingenuity, unorthodox invention, sheer resourcefulness and day-to-day guile.
The competition is fierce, with the teams who win “Race Across the World” in line for a £20,000 cash prize. Here’s what Elizabeth had to say about the adventure,
“Doing it like this is something unexpected, unimaginable, and a once in a lifetime opportunity.” – Elizabeth
Letitia seconded her sister’s feelings, adding that their first application to join was very much a half-hearted effort.
“We didn’t really take it so seriously when we applied to take part in the programme,” – Letitia
As they started their journey together, the weight of their circumstances started to hit home. Every day presents a different scenario that demands they think on their feet and adapt their plans.
“Every day we were surprising ourselves, just being put in situations where you had to make difficult decisions,” – Letitia noted.
Even with all the fun and excitement of the race, Letitia confessed that the contrasting styles still caused some friction.
“But sometimes, while we were going along, some of the differences did bring some conflict that we had to deal with,” – Letitia added.
Here’s what Elizabeth had to say about her experience in the competition. It has challenged her patience and in doing so, deepened the foundation of love and friendship she has with her sister.
“It was a different way of trying to bond with a sibling, for sure,” – Elizabeth shared.
Prior to embarking on this journey, Elizabeth revealed that she had previously been a viewer of the show. She was convinced they’d be perfect reality show contestants.
“But actually doing it and being together 24/7, trying to make decisions together, is a different story.” – Elizabeth

“We watched it before and I thought ‘we can do that, we like to travel,’” – Elizabeth recalled.
