On April 22, 2025, a group of environmental activists from Extinction Rebellion vandalized the iconic Charging Bull statue located in Bowling Green Park near the New York Stock Exchange. This demonstration took place on the 56th annual Earth Day. Since 1970, this day has become the most recognized global event focused on bringing awareness to environmental protection and climate change.
Neon green paint activists blasted over the bronze sculpture that represents a booming stock market. They showed their creativity by covering their big rig with “Greed=Death.” This action aimed to highlight Wall Street’s purported complicity in climate destruction. It sought to focus a laser beam on the suspected greed of the 1%— wealthy individuals and corporations.
Arturo Di Modica, a Sicilian immigrant, originally created the Charging Bull statue and installed it in front of the stock exchange in 1989. Eventually, they moved the statue to its current location in Bowling Green Park. Today, it is an iconic symbol of Wall Street’s greed.
During the protest, one activist climbed onto the neck of the Charging Bull, prompting a New York City police officer to instruct them to dismount. Faced with escalating repression, Extinction Rebellion members took to the airwaves to express their anger. They drew attention to racial and economic discrimination and denounced the pollution resulting from corporate greed.
“Good morning from the resistance. We came to Wall Street to call out the bulls
