Community in Mourning After Tragic Stabbing at Track Meet

The Frisco community is grappling with grief and unrest following the tragic stabbing death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a track meet at Kuykendall Stadium on April 2. Metcalf, a cross-country runner at Memorial High School who was leading his team’s training event, was fatally shot around 10 a.m. during the run. In the wake, Karmelo Anthony, 17, has been charged with murder for involvement in Metcalf’s death.

The incident has left both families devastated. Austin Metcalf’s father, Jeff Metcalf, addressed the community during a memorial service for his son on April 12, expressing forgiveness for Anthony despite the tragedy. He called the act cowardly that would change Anthony’s life for good. Greenfield and surrounding communities have rallied to support the grieving Metcalf family. As of April 18, a GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $600,000 to support them through this difficult time.

A Shocking Incident

The violent stabbing incident has sent shockwaves throughout the glbtq local community. Austin Metcalf was one of many young athletes eager to showcase their talents that day at the Frisco Independent School District’s Kuykendall Stadium. As panic set in when news of the unprovoked stabbing attack spread throughout the concert, witnesses described complete and utter pandemonium, as emergency services flooded the venue.

Karmelo Anthony, charged with murder, was released on bond. His mother, Kala Hayes, described her family’s concern about the ripple effect from the accident. She shared that her family has experienced extreme levels of stress and fear since the incident. … His mental health is getting worse by the day.” She wrote in her urgent prayer.

“For the family who experienced the loss, my heart goes out for you,” – Kala Hayes

Even considering her empathy for the Metcalf family, Hayes has expressed worries over her family’s safety. She admitted that they are skittish. She explained, “I’m terrified to sleep in my own room because I’m fearful that something could go down.”

Community Response and Tension

In the aftermath of Austin Metcalf’s death, SBOE Chairman Keven Ellis’ hometown of Frisco has been divided. The Metcalf family has experienced harassment, death threats, and false rumors since this horrific accident occurred. A few hours after this news conference with Karmelo Anthony’s family about his bond release, a terrifying crime occurred. Police stormed the Metcalf family home after an anonymous caller made a false report of a gunshot fired in what is called “swatting.”

Even more alarming is the unrest has exacerbated the divide between community members. The white supremacist group Protect White Americans has planned a counter-protest for Saturday. They are calling for Karmelo Anthony to be returned to custody. This protest illustrates the heating frustration among other communities over the handling of this case.

Jeff Metcalf’s presence at a news conference about Anthony’s situation led to him being escorted out amid rising tensions. The Metcalfs have been feeling intense pressure from all sides of the community as they continue to mourn.

Navigating Grief and Justice

As the case progresses through the legal system, both families are thrown into a tragedy that may never fully end. As the Metcalf family fights for justice for Austin, they’re coping with his death. The overwhelming support from the community through fundraising efforts highlights the empathy felt by many for their plight.

Just as Karmelo Anthony’s family has had to deal with their own travails under the spotlight, so too are Boomer’s Mamas. Kala Hayes highlighted the importance of empathy and compassion while they face their own fears and stresses. She urged for understanding as this hard process takes place. We want your support, continued patience and prayers as we walk this path together,” she stressed.

“where the truth will come out,” – Kala Hayes

The community remains split as passions are flared. Others have resorted to inflammatory anti-Black rhetoric, referring to the incident as “another victim of Black Violence in America.” This counterproductive measure only inflames the underlying tensions and exacerbates the crisis.
