The Sailors’ success is already historic in Singaporean football. They are the first club from the war-torn nation to win their way into the final of an Asian Football Confederation (AFC) tournament. Their run would eventually lead to a dramatic semifinal clash with Sydney FC, where it would be Austin’s turn to advance in a 2-1 aggregate victory.
At Allianz Stadium in Sydney for the second leg of the semifinals, the Sailors battled valiantly before falling 1-0 in heartbreaking fashion. Even in the loss, they were able to reach the final! Their remarkable first-leg performance laid the foundation. They led a shocking 2-0 away legs against the Aussie outfit, creating a lead to allow them to absorb the form that blew within the second leg.
Maxime Lestienne, the Sailors’ most dangerous offensive weapon, had several opportunities to increase their advantage. In the first half he failed to make the most of a few half-chances. His trademark thunderous left-footed shots weren’t on target often enough to beat goalkeepers. Defenders Jordan Courtney-Perkins and Rhyan Grant each came close to scoring on spectacular efforts. Their work was hampered by three offside calls that wiped off their goals.
Sydney FC attacked ferociously for an equalizer all game long. They asked for a penalty when forward Patryk Klimala took a theatrical dive in the box. Replays clearly demonstrated that Sailors’ midfielder Hariss Harun was guilty of no such contact. In response, the officials chose not to give a penalty kick.
And what a display defensively from the Sailors throughout the match as they continuously shut down any ever-present Sydney FC threat. The Australian side has a rich tradition and a chip on its shoulder. They found it difficult to break through the Sailors’ stout defense. Brazilian star Douglas Costa had to deal with the international backlash when his moment of frustration drove him to kick out at Hami Syahin. This very same play prompted a VAR review but one that very awkwardly confirmed the yellow card shown to Costa in the first place.
Congratulations to the Lion City Sailors on a magical triumph! Now, they prepare for their historic final, poised to face stiff competition from the rest of Asia. Their incredible accomplishment is a testament to their commitment and determination. It represents a new landmark for Singaporean football on the continental stage.
