At the heart of the DOGE effort is billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk. Most importantly, it is having big effects on changing the overall direction of federal research funding in the U.S. This effort aims at deep spending cuts in every area of the federal government and it will cause massive cuts to the workforce, mainly at the National Science Foundation (NSF). On Monday, DOGE delegates toured the NSF’s headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia. They hacked into the grant management systems and stopped funding within days of approval for research grants.
On the DOGE team are members Luke Farritor and Zachary Terrell. They did it by getting into the NSF’s systems and enacting a blockade on finalizing grants that were already approved. This move sent shockwaves amongst NSF employees regarding not only the security of their jobs, but the trajectory of scientific research in our country. This extremely unusual step has blindsided staffers across the board. They are now timidly charting a course between the rocks and shoals of an unknown funding stream for their agency.
Review of Active Research Grants
Among DOGE’s primary missions is to make a judgment about a list of currently active research grants. These implementation grants were judged by the NSF back in February. This literature review aims to unpack interdisciplinary terms around DEI. As of today, more than 200 grants are facing hold or imminent cancellation. This new effort would replicate the Trump administration’s predatory practices. They speak frankly about battling the “radical and wasteful” DEI programs and gender ideology that they’ve decided is promoting chaos in the classroom.
On April 20, DOGE called for an immediate stop to all research grants at the NSF. This decision entails that every new research award in 2024 will be reduced by 50 percent relative to prior forecasts. This decision has raised significant alarm over the NSF’s capacity to fund active and future research initiatives. It has sent a shiver down the spine of many scientists and academics who worry it could cripple scientific progress in America.

A spokesperson for the White House emphasized that “the Trump administration is committed to ensuring that federal research spending is in line with the priorities of everyday Americans.”
Concerns Among Researchers
DOGE’s recent actions have provoked rebuke from a wide array of critics. This dissent is particularly vigorous among Democrats on the US House of Representatives Science, Space and Technology Committee. Representative Zoe Lofgren of California expressed concern over the implications of DOGE’s review process, stating:
“It is imperative that NSF is not intimidated into accepting these vacuous findings and undermining its merit review process by substituting the Cruz Report’s slander for expert opinion.”
Researchers are concerned that this shift in emphasis will hijack the integrity of scientific inquiry. Anthony Gitter, a computational biologist at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, warned that even these modifications would reinforce harmful myths of academia. He stated:
“plays into the narrative that universities are these elitist places that harbour out-of-touch academics that are no longer doing science.”
Gitter further elaborated that while there are valid concerns about spending on certain projects, he believes DOGE’s approach is disconnected from reality:
“But it’s out of touch with the data.”
Implications for NSF Staff
The DOGE’s arrival at the NSF has injected a climate of hostility into the working environment of its staff members. From the perspective of those implementing this upheaval, many NSF employees are wondering if they’re suffering from whiplash. Constant changes, both known and unknown, continue to redefine their roles and responsibilities.
With DOGE’s actions putting the future of thousands of research projects in jeopardy, millions of scientists continue to wonder what their future holds. NSF staffers have reason to be nervous. They bristle at the imputation that their agency might one day not be able to deliver on its expansive mission of fostering scientific research and innovation.
